Drug-Related Crimes (Illegal & Prescription)

Marijuana and narcotic drugs are illegal in Texas. Punishment ranges vary widely depending on the substance and amount possessed. The most common drug charges faced by students are Possession of Marijuana (POM), Possession of Drug Paraphernalia (PODP), and Possession of a Controlled Substance (POCS).

A conviction for drug possession or drug paraphernalia could prohibit you from receiving any federal student financial aid or government housing. Just paying a citation, even if you plead no contest (nolo contendere), is a conviction and can have life-long consequences.

This is especially important for non-citizen students. If you are an international student, legal permanent resident, or have any other status, and you are convicted of a drug charge, you could have your visa revoked, be denied immigration benefits, or even be placed in removal proceedings, deported, and barred from re-entering the United States. Please see the Attorney for Students Office before you take any action.
